OOAKS 2016

OOAKS 2016

Design and build of this pop-up booth was led by Julian with teammates from Makeshift Studio. Abokichi is a Toronto-based Japanese snack and lunch shop that promotes culture-sharing through food. Its debut at the 2016 Ontario One of a Kind Show was an opportunity to share their message, story, and products on a national stage.

The booth had to be small enough to fit within a 4x10’ footprint with enough space for two salespeople, storage, display area, sample area, and checkout. Furthermore, it had to be assembled, and disassembled in two hours as per the event rules. A prefabricated booth was thus prototyped off-site, flatpacked, delivered, and assembled, which required a simple and clean design with minimal screws and no glue. The booth’s design was inspired by the simplicity of Japanese handcraft joinery and was an opportunity for the team to practice amateur sashimono. Like the message behind Abokichi’s food, the final booth design was a hybridized traditional Japanese joinery in a modern Canadain context.
