Inland 2016

Inland 2016

Inland is an annual fashion event that showcases emerging Canadian fashion and accessory designers. Makeshift Studio was hired by fashion designer Somkong to design and construct an installation that would showcase his line of Japanese haka-inspired clothing and his Inland debut.

For his second show in 2016, Makeshift was again brought on to work collaboratively in developing a modular display shelf that could be quickly assembled and disassembled in a variety of ways for his traveling exhibitions. Inspired by the “slash” motif of Somkong’s latest line of clothes, this modular system went through rigorous design development and experimentation before arriving at its final unique form. The connector piece is a cube cut from ash with the ability to join 1” maple dowels in all six directions. These dowels lock in place with a small friction-fit pin. Dowels of varying lengths create different arrangements and faces to the installation.

For his 2016 Inland show, Somkong selected a configuration with hanging displays for both storage and showcasing, as well as mirror and space for cash and checkout. Other arrangements since then have included work surfaces, shelves, hanging racks, and even a pavilion.
